“Alone In The Darkness” is the music video project I art directed. I designed the overall look of the piece and most of the characters.

Just like the song title, the band requested a heavily dark look as if there is something mysterious and sinister lurking in the darkness and praying on one’s sanity and mind. The major inspiration of the look was the video of the band’s live performance to premier their upcoming single “Alone In The Darkness”. The stage was flooded with red and blue lights and video projections of dancing skeleton figures. 

It was a fun challenge to come up with the best solution to grab the visual interest and production efficiency. I was drawn to the idea of using extremely limited colors and lighting to emphasize the ‘darkness’, which eventually led to the usage of red, blue, and black mainly, and some white as accents.

Visual Development

Styleboard/Colorboard of the music video:
Storyboarding and vis dev were simultaneously being produced during the early production. The entire production timespan was not so long, so we had to be efficient. I made key styleframes per shot as storyboard artists produced boards.

The protagonist design is a collaboration with the story lead Natalia Poteryakhin.
